Brief Biography:
I was born in Budapest, Hungary. My parents escaped during the Hungarian revolution and emigrated to the United States. I received my B.A. from Oakland University, and my Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Minnesota in Political Science. Since 1971, I have been a professor at the UA in political science, specializing in international politics, democratic processes, and domestic public policy. As executive director of the International Studies Association, I run the largest association in the world dedicated to the study of international politics and international relations, with membership of about 6,000 scholars from 81 countries, and virtually every major university in the world engaged in these fields. I have been involved with public policy development and democratization processes in the following countries since the end of the Cold War: Russia, Ukraine, Hungary, Kazakstan, Kyrgyztan, Estonia, Nicaragua, Guyana, and Romania. In particular, I was part of the international team that monitored Hungary’s first democratic elections in the post-Cold War environment. I have worked with the National Democracy Institute for Foreign Affairs, the U.S. State Department, and U.S. AID on foreign affairs initiatives and foreign policy. I was a NATO fellow in Brussels, and a delegate to the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE). I have acted on several occasions as the external reviewer for social science research projects for the European Union, including last year. I sit on the editorial boards of nine journals focusing on international and global affairs. I have published dozens of articles in professional journals, am the author and/or co-author of several books, and have also been honored by the UA with awards for teaching and distinguished public service.
